How To: Visiting Victory Column

Siegessäule, or Victory Column, is an iconic monument in Berlin. Victory Column was completed in 1873, and was built in honor of Prussian military victories. Speaking of victories – atop the column is the Roman goddess Victoria, who is the equivalent of the Greek goddess Nike, and who, you guessed it, represents victory.

The monument is not only beautiful itself, but you can climb to the top for lovely views of Berlin, and to see some of the gorgeous details of the monument up close and personal. Check out my blog visiting the column during my first day in Berlin here.

Victory Column is located in the center of a roundabout, which makes it appear a bit difficult to visit without darting through traffic, but finding your way to the entrance is easy if you know what you’re looking for!

1. Start by making your way to Großer Stern 1, the road that encircles the monument.

On the exterior of the road, you’ll find a variety of other statues on monuments, which are worth checking out.

2. Walk around the “Stern” or “Star,” the circle around the monument, until you are nearly facing her.

Stop and snap a picture in this area, because it’s pretty cool to see the monument from this perspective.

3. Turn around!

Behind you, you’ll find a large structure with a small sign that states” Tunnel zur Siegessäule” or “Tunnel to Victory Column.” Head into the building, where you’ll take a few sets of stairs down into the underground tunnel, which will safely carry you across the road without having to dodge traffic.

When I walked through the tunnel, there was a random grill at the entrance, which made me wonder if there are spontaneous BBQs near the Siegessäule.

4. Take in the views.

Before you head inside, soak in the sight of the monument up close!

5. Buy your ticket and climb the 285 stairs to the top.

Tickets are only a few euros, and it’s well worth the experience.

Make sure you stay hydrated and take your time!

6. Take a brief pause on the colonnade.

I would highly recommend stopping at the first level. It’ll give you time to catch your breath if you need to, and there are stunning mosaics around the column. The gold accents simply glow – it’s beautiful. You can also get some pretty lovely views of Berlin here.

7. Commit to your climb to the top.

Take your time checking out the view from each corner of the top of the column – not just to catch your breath, but to catch every beautiful glimpse of Berlin from above.

One of my favorite little details at the Victory Column was this sticker, which let’s you know that you’re a big idiot if you try to deface the Victory Column. Solid humor, solid humor.

And there you have it! Seven simple steps to visiting Siegessäule. Check out more of my Germany adventures here, or check out my goofy little selfie I had to take at the colonnade. I first took a selfie like this at the Eiffel Tower in Paris, and have started to make it a tradition!
